Space Maintainers for Children in Centennial Hills, Las Vegas

When a child loses a baby tooth earlier than expected, it can set off a chain reaction that affects the way their permanent teeth come in. Neighboring teeth may begin drifting into the empty space, crowding out the permanent tooth that is still developing beneath the gums. What starts as one missing tooth can lead to alignment problems, crowding, and the potential need for more involved orthodontic treatment down the road.

At All Star Kidz Pediatrics, we take a proactive approach to protecting your child’s developing smile. Our pediatric dental services include space maintainers, custom-fitted appliances designed to hold the gap left by a missing baby tooth until the permanent replacement is ready to emerge. Dr. Christopher Lamb carefully evaluates each situation to determine when a space maintainer is the right choice for your child’s long-term oral health.

Why Baby Teeth Matter More Than You Might Think

Baby teeth are far more than temporary placeholders. They guide permanent teeth into their correct positions, help your child chew food properly, support clear speech development, and maintain the structural integrity of the jaw as it grows. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s best practice guidelines, premature loss of primary teeth due to decay, trauma, or infection can alter the normal exfoliation pattern and lead to loss of arch length, which may increase the severity of future alignment problems, including crowding, crossbite, and unfavorable molar relationships.

Children lose baby teeth prematurely for a variety of reasons. Tooth decay is the most common cause, but injuries from falls or sports, infections, and certain developmental conditions can also result in early tooth loss. When this happens, the teeth on either side of the gap can begin shifting within weeks, and that lost space may never fully recover without intervention.

Types of Space Maintainers We Use

Dr. Lamb selects the type of space maintainer based on your child’s age, which tooth was lost, and what the overall dental development looks like. Each appliance is designed to be comfortable, durable, and effective at preserving the space your child’s permanent tooth needs to come in properly.

Fixed Space Maintainers

Fixed space maintainers are cemented onto adjacent teeth and stay in place until the permanent tooth is ready to erupt. The band and loop maintainer is one of the most common designs, consisting of a stainless steel band that wraps around a neighboring tooth with a wire loop extending across the gap. For children missing teeth on both sides of the arch, a lingual arch or Nance appliance connects to the molars on either side, providing bilateral support. These appliances require no effort from your child and work quietly in the background as their smile develops.

Removable Space Maintainers

For older children who are able to take responsibility for an appliance, removable space maintainers offer a flexible option. These look similar to an orthodontic retainer and can be taken out for brushing and eating. Dr. Lamb typically reserves removable options for specific clinical situations where the child is mature enough to wear the device consistently.

What to Expect When Your Child Gets a Space Maintainer

The process of placing a space maintainer is straightforward and comfortable. Dr. Lamb will take dental X-rays to assess the positioning of developing permanent teeth and determine the best appliance for the situation. An impression of your child’s teeth is taken to create a custom-fitted maintainer, and the appliance is cemented into place at a follow-up visit.

Most children adjust to their space maintainer within a few days and barely notice it after the initial period. There are a few guidelines that help keep the appliance in good shape and your child comfortable:

  • Avoid sticky, chewy candy and gum that can pull on the appliance or loosen the cement holding it in place.
  • Continue brushing and flossing around the maintainer carefully, paying extra attention to the areas where the band meets the tooth.
  • Attend all scheduled checkups and cleanings so Dr. Lamb can monitor the appliance and track the progress of the permanent tooth.
  • Let our team know right away if the maintainer feels loose, breaks, or causes any discomfort.

Once the permanent tooth begins erupting into the correct position, the space maintainer is removed during a quick, painless appointment.

Preventing the Need for Space Maintainers

The best way to avoid premature tooth loss is through consistent preventive care. Regular dental sealants, fluoride treatments, proper brushing habits, and routine checkups all work together to protect baby teeth from decay and keep your child’s smile developing on schedule. When cavities do occur, treating them promptly with restorations helps preserve the natural tooth and eliminates the need for extraction whenever possible.
