Is My Child Too Young for Dental X-Rays?

Boy child and dentist look at x-ray image in the dental office.

Most children can and should receive dental X-rays, and there is no standard age that is “too young” for them. When a child’s teeth begin to touch one another, typically around ages 2 to 3, X-rays become a valuable tool for detecting decay that a visual exam alone cannot catch.

At All Star Kidz Pediatrics in Las Vegas, Dr. Christopher Lamb and our team believe that informed parents make the best decisions for their children’s health. As a board-certified pediatric dentist and Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Lamb takes a thoughtful, individualized approach to every diagnostic recommendation, including when to take dental X-rays. Every child who walks through our doors is treated as an individual, not a protocol.

Why Pediatric Dentists Recommend X-Rays

Pediatric dental X-rays serve a very different purpose than the kind of imaging most parents are used to thinking about. They aren’t taken simply because a child is due for one. They’re taken because teeth hide things. Baby teeth are smaller and more tightly spaced than adult teeth, making it nearly impossible to detect cavities between them without the help of radiographs.

Beyond catching cavities early, X-rays help pediatric dentists assess several things that affect your child’s long-term oral development. Here are some of the key reasons a dentist might recommend them:

  • Decay between teeth: Cavities that form between teeth aren’t visible to the naked eye, and catching them early prevents them from spreading.
  • Developing permanent teeth: X-rays allow dentists to see permanent teeth forming beneath the gumline and identify any alignment concerns before they become serious.
  • Bone health: Infections, cysts, or bone irregularities can develop silently, and radiographs provide the only reliable way to detect them.
  • Space issues: If a baby tooth is lost early or a tooth is crowded, X-rays help determine whether space maintainers or other early interventions are warranted.

Every X-ray taken at our office is based on a clinical need, not a blanket schedule. If there’s no clinical reason to take them, we won’t.

How Safe Are X-Rays for Young Children?

This is the question most parents want answered, and it’s a fair one. The short answer is that modern dental X-rays are extremely low in radiation, especially when taken digitally. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s guidelines on prescribing dental radiographs for infants, children, and adolescents emphasize minimizing radiation exposure in young patients while still ensuring proper diagnostic care.

Dental professionals follow the ALARA principle, which stands for “as low as reasonably achievable.” Meaning that they use digital sensors, precise beam collimation, and X-rays only when clinically justified. Digital X-rays use significantly less radiation than traditional film, making them among the safest diagnostic tools in modern dentistry.

How Often Should Children Get Dental X-Rays?

There’s no single answer that applies to every child. Frequency depends on your child’s individual risk for cavities, the stage of their dental development, and what the dentist observes during a routine checkup and cleaning. A child with no history of cavities and a low risk of decay may not need X-rays at every visit. A child with tightly spaced teeth or a history of decay may need them more frequently. The goal is never to take more X-rays than necessary, and never fewer than what’s needed to keep your child’s teeth healthy.

Starting Early Makes a Difference

Children who receive consistent dental care from an early age are far better positioned to avoid serious oral health problems down the road. Establishing a relationship with a trusted pediatric dentist before problems arise, rather than waiting until something hurts, is one of the most impactful things a parent can do. Early dental care lays a foundation for healthy habits and helps children feel comfortable in a dental setting long before any anxiety has a chance to take root.

If your child has ever shown signs of dental worry, it’s worth knowing that managing childhood dental anxiety is something our team approaches with patience and care. Dr. Lamb’s entire philosophy is built around making children feel safe and at ease, and that extends to every part of the visit, including X-rays.
